Pre-New York Fashion Week Motivation

New York Fashion Week is right around the corner. Within weeks the city will be filled with extra tall goddesses rocking five-inch heels and gorgeous designer labels (and I am not even talking about the runways at Lincoln Center).

NYC inspires fashion! We live for style, we breathe trends, we simply adore the creativity of new clothes, and there is never a better time to be in NYC than during Fashion Week. It is truly inspiring. However, it can also be a bit intimidating (especially if you’ve put on a few holiday pounds…oh those Christmas cookies are the devil).

Personally, I prefer to use NYFW as a motivator. There is always a dress, jumper or top that I am dying to fit into, but during NYFW I want to fit into it AND look stunning (nothing else will do when sitting across Molly Sims at the Herve Leger show).

I use that February deadline to start eating healthy (well healthier…I can’t give up my Sunday brunch bacon). I am not a big dieter nor do I like to starve myself, but my dad once told me that moderation is key when it comes to food. I decided to limit the amount of carbs (key word limit, not cut out as there are vitamins and minerals that come from certain carbs).

So many of my friends have tried the gluten-free diet, and I actually like it as well. There are so many yummy options, especially at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Van’s Natural Food has a whole mind-blowing section of gluten free products, and have you seen the AMAZING gluten free desserts at Tate’s Bake Shop? Who knew gluten free could be so heavenly?!

Now while gluten free is a great (and apparently delicious) way to lose a few pounds and be healthy (except on Sunday when I have to have an egg’s benedict…it’s like NYC survival), wheat-free is actually just as important, and though the terms are often used interchangeably they are not the same thing. While all wheat contains gluten, not all gluten comes from wheat. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley and rye, and there are many items that are yummy and wheat-free like Kind Bars.

Of course the main reason to be wheat-free is because a lot of wheat is genetically modified in the US, which to me is like eating genetically modified chicken from KFC (nope…sorry…not doing it). Try going gluten-free and wheat-free foods for 3-5 days a week, and I swear you’ll feel better!
